of Awakening: From Stream-Entry to Arahantship

The road from ordinary person to noble one is divided into four stages of realization. Understanding them gives us a map of the destination and of the milestones along the way.

Category: Buddhism BasicsReading time: 8 min read#fourstagesofawakening #noblefruits #liberation

In the Buddha’s teaching, the path of practice from ordinary person to noble one is described through the four noble fruits, the four stages of awakening: stream-entry, once-returning, non-returning, and arahantship. These four stages are milestones marking progress on the path to liberation, and each one corresponds to the abandoning of further defilements that keep us bound. Understanding them gives us a clear map of both the destination and the journey.

Pāli termAriya-puggala — “noble person.” The four fruits: Sotāpanna (stream-enterer), Sakadāgāmī (once-returner), Anāgāmī (non-returner), Arahant (the fully liberated one). Each fruit cuts off a further set of fetters.

PART 1From ordinary person to noble one

The Buddha’s teaching distinguishes between the “ordinary person” (puthujjana, someone who has not yet realized a noble fruit) and the “noble one” (ariya, someone who has realized at least stream-entry). The shift from ordinary to noble is a decisive turning point: when a person attains stream-entry, they have “entered the noble stream.” Something in the mind has changed at a fundamental level and cannot be undone — they have truly “seen the Dhamma,” and they are certain to go on to complete liberation. The four noble fruits trace the process from this turning point all the way to perfect freedom. It is important to understand that the noble fruits are not “titles” or “ranks” in any social sense. They are real and profound transformations of the mind — ever deeper degrees of release from defilement and suffering. Each fruit corresponds to cutting off further fetters (the cords that bind us), and therefore to a steadily growing inner freedom and peace.

PART 2Stream-entry (Sotāpanna): entering the noble stream

The first noble fruit is stream-entry (Sotāpanna, “one who has entered the stream”). The stream-enterer has cut off the first three fetters: identity view (the illusion of a self), doubt (about the Triple Gem and the path), and clinging to rites and rituals (wrongly holding on to ceremonies and observances). This attainment carries immense significance. The stream-enterer has truly seen the truth — has seen the Dhamma — at a direct level, has unshakable confidence in the Triple Gem grounded in experience, and, most importantly, has “entered the stream” that leads with certainty to liberation. The Buddha said that a stream-enterer will no longer fall into the realms of misery (the lower destinations) and will reach complete liberation within at most seven more lives. Although many defilements remain — sensual desire and ill will are still present — the stream-enterer has a deep peace of heart: they know they are on the right road and that they will surely arrive. This is a milestone full of hope, and the near goal that many practitioners set their sights on.

From the Suttas“The fruit of stream-entry is more precious than sovereignty over the whole earth, than being reborn in the heavens, than lordship over the entire universe.”— Dhammapada, verse 178 (Dhp 178, paraphrased)

The stream-enterer has entered the current that flows with certainty to the ocean of liberation — like a drop of water that has merged with a river and cannot flow back.

PART 3Once-returning and non-returning

The second noble fruit is once-returning (Sakadāgāmī, “one who returns once”). Besides the three fetters already abandoned at stream-entry, the once-returner has greatly weakened two more: sensual desire and ill will. Because the defilements have become so much thinner, the once-returner will be reborn in the sense-sphere world at most one more time before reaching liberation. The third noble fruit is non-returning (Anāgāmī, “one who does not return”). The non-returner has completely cut off the five lower fetters — sensual desire and ill will included. Having fully uprooted sensual desire and ill will (the two strongest defilements of the sense-sphere world), the non-returner is never again reborn in the sense-sphere world; if they do not attain arahantship in this life, they are reborn in a higher realm and attain liberation there. At this stage the practitioner enjoys a very deep inner peace and freedom — no longer driven by sensual craving or by hatred, the two greatest sources of suffering and unrest in ordinary life.

PART 4Arahantship: complete liberation

The highest noble fruit is that of the Arahant — the one who is completely liberated. The arahant has entirely cut off all ten fetters, including the subtlest defilements: conceit (māna, the refined sense of “I am”), restlessness (uddhacca, the subtle agitation of the mind), and ignorance (avijjā, not seeing reality clearly at its deepest level). With every defilement wholly destroyed, the arahant has realized final liberation — the complete end of suffering, with no further rebirth in the round of saṃsāra. This is the full completion of the path, the supreme happiness. The arahant’s mind is entirely free, pure, and at peace: no longer touched by greed, hatred, or delusion in any form, no longer holding a fragile “self” that needs defending, with nothing left that can shake their profound calm. The Buddha and great disciples such as Sāriputta and Moggallāna were all arahants — human beings who reached the summit of the liberation toward which the path leads.

The four noble fruits
Stream-entry: enters the noble stream, cuts off the first 3 fetters, at most 7 more lives until liberation.
Once-returning: weakens sensual desire and ill will; returns to the sense-sphere world at most once.
Non-returning: fully uproots sensual desire and ill will; never returns to the sense-sphere world.
Arahantship: cuts off all 10 fetters; complete liberation, the end of saṃsāra.

PART 5A gradual and trustworthy process

The four noble fruits show that liberation is a gradual, understandable, and trustworthy process — not a mystical event or a miracle. Each stage marks a genuine transformation of the mind and an ever deeper release from the defilements. This is deeply encouraging: it shows that the path has clear milestones, that progress is real and can be recognized, and that the destination — however distant — truly exists and can be reached. At the same time, the gradual nature of the process reminds us of the importance of patience and perseverance. We should not expect to leap straight into complete liberation; instead we focus on steady practice that gradually thins the defilements, moving forward one step at a time. For most practitioners, the near and realistic goal is stream-entry — the turning point of “entering the stream” that guarantees we are on the right road and will surely reach the end.

PART 6The destination and the journey

Understanding the four noble fruits gives us both a destination to aim for and encouragement for the journey. The destination — the complete liberation of arahantship — is a real fact, shown to be attainable by the Buddha and countless disciples. This gives the path a noble and deeply meaningful goal. But just as important, the noble fruits show that every step of the journey has value: even stream-entry, the first noble stage, brings a profound transformation and peace of heart, praised by the Buddha as more precious than a royal throne. And on the way toward the noble fruits, every effort to thin the defilements brings immediate benefit — less suffering, more peace, more freedom. So although the destination is lofty and far away, we need not feel overwhelmed or discouraged. What we need to do, right now, is to keep practising the path of virtue, concentration, and wisdom (sīla, samādhi, paññā), thinning the defilements step by step, and let the process carry us forward naturally. Every step is a step toward freedom, and every step is worth taking.

Take stream-entry as your near and encouraging goal: keep practising virtue, concentration, and wisdom, and wear away identity view and doubt — the turning point of “entering the stream” is real and within reach.

In short

• The four noble fruits mark the progress from ordinary person to noble one; each stage cuts off further fetters.

• Stream-entry: enters the stream, cuts off the first 3 fetters, certain to reach liberation. Once-returning: thins sensual desire and ill will.

• Non-returning: fully uproots sensual desire and ill will. Arahantship: cuts off all 10 fetters — complete liberation.

• Liberation is a gradual, trustworthy process; every step has value; stream-entry is a near and encouraging goal.

Questions for reflection

Does knowing that liberation has clear, trustworthy milestones make the path feel closer to you?

Are you expecting quick progress, or are you ready for a gradual, steady journey?

This article is part of the Buddhism Fundamentals series — a reading path best followed in order.

Rebirth and the Soul: What Does Buddhism Say?

Why Do Good People Suffer?
