Soul: What Does Buddhism Say?

If there is no unchanging soul, what is it that is reborn? This is one of the subtlest and most often misunderstood questions in Buddhism.

Category: Buddhism BasicsReading time: 9 min read#rebirth #nonself #samsara

Buddhism speaks of rebirth, yet it also teaches non-self — that there is no permanent self or soul. This raises a subtle question that puzzles many people: if there is no unchanging soul, what is it that is reborn? It is one of the most profound and most frequently misunderstood points of the Dhamma.

Pāli termPunabbhava — “renewed existence, becoming again.” Buddhism teaches that rebirth is not a soul (attā) migrating from one place to another, but the continuation of a conditioned stream of mind and matter.

PART 1Buddhism rejects an unchanging soul

Unlike many religions that believe in an unchanging soul (atman) transmigrating from one life to the next, Buddhism rejects the idea of any such permanent entity. The teaching of non-self (anattā) shows that what we call “I” is not a fixed soul but a stream of body and mind — form, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness — continually arising and passing away, with no unchanging core. If there is no soul even in this present life, then there is no soul that travels on to the next. This is one of the fundamental points that sets Buddhism apart.

PART 2So what is reborn?

If there is no soul, what links this life to the next? Buddhism’s answer is: not some fixed “thing” that moves across, but the continuation of a conditioned stream of mind. The very moment the last mind-moment of one life (the death consciousness) ceases, it serves as the condition for the first mind-moment of the next life to arise, carrying with it the accumulated kammic tendencies. No intact entity leaps across; there is only a continuing stream of cause and effect. The continuity is real, but it needs no soul to carry it.

From the Suttas“Neither the same person nor another. It is like milk turning into curd: the curd is not the milk, yet it does not exist apart from the milk.”— The Questions of King Milinda (Milindapañha) (paraphrased)

It is not an old soul that is reborn, nor an entirely new person — it is our own stream, continuing yet always changing.

PART 3The images of the candle and the river

Two images help us grasp this subtle point. The first: a flame passed from one candle to another. The flame of the second candle is not the same flame, yet neither is it entirely different — it was born from the first flame and carries it on. The second: a river. Today’s water is not yesterday’s water, yet it is still “that river” — a continuity with no fixed “thing” at its center. Rebirth is like this: a continuous, conditioned flow, not a motionless soul passing through.

PART 4Even in this life we are “reborn” continuously

Here is a way to make this less abstract: even within a single life, we change ceaselessly. The five-year-old child and the adult you are now — are they the same person? The body has replaced nearly all its cells, the personality has changed, memories have faded, and ways of thinking are completely different. No fixed “I” persists intact throughout; there is only a continuous stream of change. If even within one life there is continuity without an unchanging soul, then the continuation of that stream of mind across lives needs no soul either. Rebirth is simply an extension of the process we are living every day.

For contemplation
1. Search your body and mind to see whether there is any fixed “I,” or only processes of change.
2. Reflect: you ten years ago and you now — the same person, or a continuous stream of change?
3. See that continuity is real without needing any unchanging entity.

PART 5Kamma is the connecting thread, not a soul

What, then, keeps the stream of rebirth from being random chaos, and gives it continuity of character and inclination? It is kamma — the tendencies accumulated through intentional action. Kamma acts as the “thread” that carries tendencies from one moment to the next, and from one life to the next. A stream of mind that habitually nurtures hatred inclines toward states of suffering; a stream of mind that is habitually peaceful and wholesome inclines toward happy states. But this “thread” is not an entity; it is a stream of cause and effect. That is why every present action matters — it shapes the stream that will carry on.

PART 6Why this matters for practice

Understanding rebirth and non-self correctly is not about metaphysical debate; it has deep practical meaning. First, it lightens the burden of a “self” that must constantly be protected and gratified — the root of so much suffering. Second, it reminds us that every present action matters, because we are shaping our own stream, both in this life and beyond. For those who cannot yet verify rebirth for themselves, Buddhism does not demand belief; what matters is living wholesomely right now — because a wholesome life brings peace and happiness in the present, whether or not there is a next life. And the insight into non-self, once it ripens through meditation, is the very key to final liberation: letting go of a self we never truly had.

Start simply: instead of worrying about metaphysics, notice right now — what tendencies is your stream of mind nurturing?

In short

• Buddhism rejects an unchanging soul; non-self holds true even in this very life.

• Rebirth is not a soul migrating, but the continuation of a conditioned stream of mind.

• The candle and the river: “neither the same person nor another.”

• Kamma is the thread that links tendencies; every present action shapes the stream.

Questions for reflection

When you search for an unchanging “I” within yourself, what do you actually find?

Whether or not you believe in rebirth yet, what does a wholesome life bring you right now?

This article is part of the Buddhism Fundamentals series — a reading path best followed in order.

Why Do Good People Suffer?
