vs. Mahāyāna: What Is the Fundamental Difference?

The two great traditions of Buddhism grew from the same root but developed in different ways. Understanding how they differ helps us respect both without confusing them.

Category: Buddhism BasicsReading time: 9 min read#theravada #mahayana #traditions

Buddhism today has two great traditions: Theravāda (often called “original” or early Buddhism) and Mahāyāna (the “Great Vehicle”). Many Vietnamese people are familiar with Mahāyāna temples but know little about Theravāda. Understanding the fundamental differences between the two traditions helps us respect both, know which lineage we are actually practicing in, and avoid mixing them up.

Pāli termTheravāda — “the teaching of the elders,” the tradition that has preserved the Dhamma through the Pāli scriptures. Mahāyāna — “the Great Vehicle,” a tradition that developed later, with scriptures composed mainly in Sanskrit.

PART 1One shared root

Before speaking of differences, it is worth stressing what they have in common: both traditions go back to the Buddha Sakyamuni himself and share the same core foundations — the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path, dependent origination, the three characteristics of impermanence, suffering and non-self, the goal of liberation from suffering, and the emphasis on virtue, concentration and wisdom. This is one tree with two great branches, not two different trees. Every difference rests on top of this deep common ground, and those differences should never become a reason for one tradition to look down on the other.

PART 2The ideal of practice: arahant and bodhisattva

The most striking difference lies in the ideal of practice. Theravāda emphasizes the ideal of the arahant — one who trains, uproots the defilements and becomes completely free from the cycle of rebirth, even in this very life when the conditions are ripe. The focus is on one’s own liberation through personal effort, following exactly the path the Buddha pointed out. Mahāyāna exalts the ideal of the bodhisattva — one who vows to practice over countless aeons in order to become a Buddha, and along the way vows to save all beings, even postponing their own final liberation for the sake of others. This is a difference of emphasis regarding the path and its scope, even though both value wisdom and compassion alike.

From the Suttas“Be an island unto yourselves, be a refuge unto yourselves; take the Dhamma as your island, take the Dhamma as your refuge.”— Dīgha Nikāya (Mahāparinibbāna Sutta) — the spirit of Theravāda

Two different vehicles heading toward one destination: the end of suffering and compassion for all beings.

PART 3Scriptures and language

Theravāda is based on the Pāli Canon (Tipiṭaka) — an ancient body of scripture regarded as the closest to the Buddha’s original words, preserved first by oral transmission and later written down. Mahāyāna, besides recognizing many of the early scriptures, also has its own vast treasury of later scriptures (such as the Prajñāpāramitā, the Lotus and the Avataṃsaka sūtras), composed mainly in Sanskrit, with many new teachings and skillful means. This difference in scripture leads to differences in detailed doctrine and in practice, even though the foundation remains shared.

PART 4Differences in practice and outward form

In practice, the two traditions differ in many outward ways that Vietnamese people easily notice. Theravāda is usually simpler in ritual and emphasizes insight meditation (vipassanā) and calm meditation; its monks keep the original monastic discipline (going on alms round, not eating after midday, wearing saffron robes), and it does not venerate a large number of Buddhas and bodhisattvas. Mahāyāna is richer in ritual and venerates many Buddhas and bodhisattvas (Avalokiteśvara/Quan Âm, Kṣitigarbha, Amitābha and others); it has practices such as reciting the Buddha’s name in the hope of rebirth in the Pure Land, and its monastics are usually vegetarian. These differences of form reflect how Buddhism adapted to different cultures over the course of history.

To understand more clearly
1. First recognize the shared foundation: the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path, dependent origination, virtue–concentration–wisdom.
2. Understand that the different ideals (arahant / bodhisattva) are differences of emphasis, not opposites.
3. Know which lineage you follow so you can practice consistently and avoid mixing methods.

PART 5Avoiding the attitude of “better” and “worse”

One important point: understanding the differences is not about judging which tradition is “more correct” or “higher.” History sadly shows that mutual disdain between traditions has caused needless division. Each tradition has nurtured countless noble practitioners and helped countless people suffer less. The wise respect both as different paths leading to liberation and compassion, learn from both, and focus on sincere practice rather than arguing over which is superior. The Buddha himself taught us to let go of clinging to views; holding tightly to “my tradition is the most correct” is also a form of clinging.

PART 6Why Dòng Pháp follows Theravāda

Dòng Pháp focuses on the Theravāda tradition and the Pāli scriptures for several practical reasons. Theravāda preserves the teaching in a form closest to the Buddha’s original words, with a clear and practical system of training (especially the four foundations of mindfulness and vipassanā) that suits modern people looking for peace and insight in everyday life. The Theravāda approach typically emphasizes verifying things for oneself — “come and see” — rather than simply believing. Yet this choice does not imply any disregard for Mahāyāna; it is simply choosing one specific path in order to walk it deeply. What matters for each of us is not which tradition “wins,” but finding a suitable path and practicing it sincerely, so that we suffer less and live with more peace and joy.

Whichever lineage we follow, the essentials are the same: live wholesomely, cultivate the mind, and move toward the end of suffering through wisdom and loving-kindness.

In short

• Theravāda and Mahāyāna share one root: the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path, dependent origination, virtue–concentration–wisdom.

• They differ in their ideal (arahant / bodhisattva), their scriptures (Pāli / Sanskrit), and their forms of practice.

• Avoid the attitude of “better” and “worse”; respect both as paths toward liberation.

• Dòng Pháp follows Theravāda because it stays close to the Buddha’s original words and offers a clear practice — with no disregard for Mahāyāna.

Questions for reflection

Are you clinging to “my tradition is the most correct” as a form of attachment?

What matters more to you: which tradition “wins,” or finding a path that helps you suffer less?

This article is part of the Buddhism Fundamentals series — a reading path best followed in order.

The Ten Fetters (Saṃyojana): Ten Bonds That Tie Us to Saṃsāra

The Four Stages of Awakening: From Stream-Entry to Arahantship

Rebirth and the Soul: What Does Buddhism Say?

Why Do Good People Suffer?
