Who Is Reborn, and Who Bears the Kamma?

A paradox that puzzles many people: if there is no self, who carries the kamma and who reaps its fruit? Buddhism answers with a law of cause and effect that needs no “person.”

Category: Buddhism BasicsReading time: 8 min read#nonself #kamma #causeandeffect

This is one of the sharpest questions anyone studying Buddhism will meet: if the Buddha taught non-self — that there is no lasting self — then who makes kamma, who bears it, who is reborn, and who experiences the results? It sounds like a contradiction. Yet this very question, when answered correctly, sheds light on one of the deepest points of the Dhamma.

Pāli termAnattā — “non-self”: there is no permanent, separate self that is in control. Non-self does not deny that processes exist; it only denies a fixed “I” standing behind those processes.

PART 1A question built on an assumption worth re-examining

The question “who bears the kamma?” quietly assumes that there must be a “who” — an independent entity — for cause and effect to work at all. But that assumption is exactly what Buddhism invites us to look at again. The Buddha showed that cause and effect operate without needing a “person” in charge in the middle. There is action and there is the result of action; there is the making of kamma and there is the reaping of its fruit — but all of it unfolds as a causal process, with no permanent “agent” standing behind it. Once we stop assuming there has to be a “who,” the question dissolves by itself.

PART 2There is action, but no one who acts

This is the core Buddhist way of putting it: “There is action, but no doer; there is the reaping of fruit, but no one who reaps.” It sounds strange at first, but look closely and it makes sense. When a flash of anger arises, leads to hurtful words, and then leaves regret behind, the whole chain unfolds as conditioned phenomena arising and passing away — with no fixed “self” sitting at the center giving orders. A thought arises, with no separate “thinker”; a feeling appears, with no “feeler” standing apart. There is only process, and that process follows cause and effect.

From the Suttas“There is suffering, but no sufferer is found. There is action, but no doer is found. There is Nibbāna, but no one who enters it is found.”— Visuddhimagga (The Path of Purification) (paraphrase)

Cause and effect need no “person” in order to work, just as a river needs no “owner of the river” in order to flow.

PART 3Continuity explains responsibility

So if there is no self, why “must” someone who does evil face the consequences? The answer lies in the continuity of the mental stream. Although there is no unchanging entity, there is still an unbroken causal stream — this particular stream of mind and matter, not some other one. Whatever action is sown in a given stream ripens as fruit in that very stream, according to the law of cause and effect. This is not a “fairness” arranged by someone; it is a natural law: the tree grows in the plot of ground where the seed was planted. The continuity of the mental stream is quite enough to explain responsibility, without any need for an unchanging soul.

PART 4The mango seed and the mango tree

An example makes this clear. Plant a mango seed; a mango tree grows and bears fruit. Is the mango fruit the original seed? No — it is something different. But can the fruit exist apart from that seed? Again, no — it is the result of a causal chain that began with that seed. There is no fixed “mango essence” travelling all the way from seed to fruit, only a continuous causal process. It is the same with human beings: the one who reaps the fruit is not the same person who sowed the cause (since everything has changed), yet neither is it a completely different person (since it is one continuous stream). Cause and effect run through that stream from beginning to end, without needing a self.

For contemplation
1. When an emotion arises, try to find “the one who is feeling” — do you actually come across a separate entity?
2. Observe: is there only process (feelings and thoughts arising and passing), or is there a fixed “someone” standing behind it?
3. See that cause and effect keep working even though no “person” in charge can be found.

PART 5Non-self is not nihilism

There is a dangerous misunderstanding to avoid: non-self does not mean “nothing exists, everything is meaningless, so anything goes.” The Buddha clearly rejected that kind of nihilism. Non-self does not say that nothing exists; it says that what exists is a conditioned process, not a fixed self. Kamma still operates, actions still have consequences, morality still matters, and practice is still meaningful. In fact, understanding non-self increases our responsibility rather than reducing it: knowing that every action shapes our own stream, we live more carefully and more wholesomely.

PART 6Letting go of a self we never had

The most liberating thing about truly understanding non-self is this realization: the heaviest burden we carry all our lives is the burden of protecting, satisfying, and worrying about a “self” that, when we look carefully, we never actually find as a fixed entity. So much suffering is born from clinging to “I” and “mine” — fear of loss, rivalry, wounded pride, anxiety about ourselves. When the insight into non-self ripens through meditation, that burden is set down. This is not a loss — we lose nothing real; we only let go of an illusion. And together with that illusion, we let go of the countless sufferings that had been piled on top of it. The question “who bears the kamma?” finally leads us to the very door of liberation: seeing that there is no “who” that needs protecting, we are free.

Start modestly: the next time wounded pride or worry about “yourself” arises, gently ask, “What, really, is this self that is being protected?” — and observe.

In short

• The question “who bears the kamma?” quietly assumes there must be a “who” — exactly what Buddhism invites us to re-examine.

• “There is action, but no doer”; cause and effect operate without any permanent agent.

• The continuity of the mental stream explains responsibility, with no need for an unchanging soul.

• Non-self is not nihilism; understanding it means setting down the burden of a self that was never truly there.

Questions for reflection

When you look for “the one who suffers” in one of your own sufferings, do you find an entity, or only a process?

How much of your anxiety comes from protecting a “self”?

This article is part of the Buddhism Fundamentals series — a reading path best followed in order.

Theravāda vs. Mahāyāna: What Is the Fundamental Difference?

The Ten Fetters (Saṃyojana): Ten Bonds That Tie Us to Saṃsāra

The Four Stages of Awakening: From Stream-Entry to Arahantship

Rebirth and the Soul: What Does Buddhism Say?

Why Do Good People Suffer?
